One side effect of online dating is the data. Thanks to online dating services, we have huge amounts of data about what draws people together, and what, in particular, people are drawn to in a picture. We already know that when surveyed, men and women both put a smile at the top of their priority list for a potential date.

But new data from an entirely different dating service shows us more detail about what smiles really make the difference.

Showing Your Teeth Will Make You More Popular

Coffee Meets Bagels found when it looked at the profile pictures of its members that showing teeth in a smile was more likely to get attention, especially for men. Of the men whose pictures were “liked” more than 50% of the time, 79% of their pictures are showing off their teeth when smiling, compared to 16% who aren’t smiling and only 5% who have a close-mouthed grin. In fact, among the most popular men on the dating service four out of five were showing their teeth.

For women, the story was similar, but not quite as slanted. Of women who were “liked” more than 50% of the time, 58% were showing their pearly whites in their smile, while, 24% had a close-mouthed grin and 17% weren’t smiling. Only 2% were laughing in their picture. And among the most popular women on the dating service, three out of five were showing their teeth in their smile.

Another important factor is the posture of your head. Women who tilt their heads are more likely to get attention than men. Of the women whose pictures were liked more than 50% of the time, 71% were tilting their heads, but for men, only 26% were smiling while tilting their head.

Why Aren’t You Smiling?

So, there you have it. With this new data from an independent data service showing how important smiling is to getting attention for your dating profile, it’s time to reevaluate your pictures. If they’re all unsmiling or–especially for men–smiling but not showing teeth, it’s time to put up some different pictures. But what do you do if you are so unhappy with the appearance of your smile that you just can’t bear to smile?

Maybe it’s time to consider cosmetic dentistry. No matter what you dislike about your smile, cosmetic dentistry can help. Teeth whitening can help with discolored teeth. Porcelain veneers can help with gapped teeth, deeply discolored teeth, or chipped and cracked teeth. Even if you have one or more missing teeth, dental implants can help.

While cosmetic dentistry can’t guarantee you’ll get dates, it seems your odds of having one of the most popular profiles is five times greater (for men) if you’re showing your teeth in your smile than for any expression that doesn’t show teeth.
